Dancing butterflies
In the last village we visited, we saw several beautiful butterflies feeding over the fields.
They are attracted to the manure which has been applied to the land not long ago.
Yes, butterflies feed on decomposing matters rather than flower honey. Bees do…

Visit to Qinmo and Experimental Rice Duck Eco-farm at Xin Tang
A fieldtrip with the GreenField Foundation in search of unpolluted land for biodynamic farming in Qinmo Village last weekend!
Thunderstorm warning was issued on the day we went to Qinmo (琴模), a village in rural Zhaoqing (肇慶) of Guangdong. On our way, an overturned truck jammed the traffic for over an hour near Guangzhou… then a flooding road awaiting us along Xi Jiang (西江, literally meaning the “West River”) when we are approaching Huaiji (懷集). Mission of the day is to search for suitable piece of land in Qinmo village for biodynamic farming… More pics!
Sunny the next day, we headed towards the experimental rice duck project of the South China Agriculture University at Xin Tang (新塘, literally meaning the “New Pond”) near Zeng Cheng (增城) the town of lychee. Ducks are reared in paddy fields to create a better eco-system… More pics!

田原夢醉／碎
五 月 中 參 加 台 北 INPUT 世 界 公 視 大 展 後 ， 順 道 往 台 中 朋 友 家 的 農 場 看 看 ， 他 的 家 鄉 在 新 社 ， 當 地 有 很 多 香 菇 場 及 果 園 ， 朋 友 如 大 多 數 年 青 人 一 樣 ， 並 沒 有 加 入 家 族 的 農 場 工 作 ， 而 在 新 竹 開 展 新 科 技 事 業 。
但 我 仍 很 羡 慕 他 ， 不 只 假 日 可 以 回 歸 田 原 ， 而 且 甚 麼 時 候 厭 倦 了 城 市 裡 的 高 壓 生 活 時 ， 還 真 真 正 正 有 另 一 個 選 擇 ， 回 鄉 耕 田 是 也 。 老 一 輩 的 農 者 亦 言 ， 近 年 台 灣 的 經 濟 不 景 ， 亦 多 了 年 輕 人 參 與 農 場 管 理 工 作 ， 而 當 地 農 場 都 很 先 進 ， 主 要 也 是 進 行 生 態 農 耕 ， 環 境 優 美 清 靜 。
返 回 香 港 我 跟 媽 子 提 到 這 件 事 ， 我 說 如 果 我 們 在 新 界 有 個 田 地 多 好 呢 ， 有 個 後 著 。 怎 料 媽 子 反 駁 說 ， 在 香 港 有 地 還 耕 甚 麼 田 ， 把 地 賣 了 ， 拿 著 大 筆 錢 好 好 投 資 ， 那 怕 甚 麼 生 活 無 保 障 。
我 啞 口 無 言 了 。

Stolen Harvest: the hijacking of the global food supply
Another book by Vandana Shiva…
Through lots of cases in India and other 3rd world countries, Vandana shows how globalized, corporate agriculture (=monoculture) is destroying the livelihood of small farmers, the environment, and undermining the quality and diversity of the food we eat.
I have just started the book, but it’s full of little details that provoke you to see things differently. Like the view on “abundance”:

“A worldview of abundance is the worldview of women in India who leave food for ants on their doorstep, even as they create the most beautiful art in kolams, mandalas, and rangoli with rice flour. Abundance is the worldview of peasant women who weave beautiful designs of paddy to hang up for birds when the birds do not find grain in the fields. This view of abundance recognizes that, in giving food to other beings and species, we maintain conditions for our own food security.” p.17 of Stolen Harvest
I can’t write more, too tempted to dive into the book again…

夜 晚 是 個 魔 術 師
工作關係，在尖沙咀一幢舊大廈的天台上站了兩個晚上，由日落時分到十時，彌敦道一帶的舊樓將逐漸被取締，上圖那有趣的新舊對比，很快又成為歷史了。
夜晚是個魔術師，一排排豪華石屎屏障，竟化為超現實的太空基地，據說給太空光射過，白天便會不其然拼搏工作，深信總有一天可以進駐太空基地，從此「君臨天下」！

Economy = Ecology!
Just started the book Earth Democracy, by Vandana Shiva. The first chapter “Living Economies” starts with this:
“The word economics is derived from the Greek word oikos, meaning home.”
The author continues,
“Like the word economy, ecology also comes from the Greek word for home or household. Yet in the context of market-oriented developiment, economy and ecology have been pitted against each other.”
“However nature’s economy is the first economy, the primary economy on which all other economies rest. Nature’s economy consists of the production of goods and services by nature — the water recycled and distributed through the hydrologic cycle, the soil fertility produced by micro-organisms, the plants fertilized by pollinators. Human production, human creativity shrinks to insignificance in comparisonwith nature.”
What a reminder of our triviality!
If we continue to ignore the importance of Nature’s economy, how long can our Market economy survive?
